Make it easier in terms of navigation as to what type of formats a show might be available. FOr example, when you select a band, and get a list of shows, include a detail that says "This show is available in shnf/flac/torrent" etc. That way if someone's looking for say, a bit torrent download, they can just scroll through, rather than havin to click into each individual show to see if that type is available. Add a link on the main Audio page to explain the bandwidth sharing tools available. This page should include which servers have what tools running on them with links to download the tools as well as a FAQ if available. This should encourage use of these tools since you won't have to search the fourms to find this info.

Also, I second the request to be able to view individual bands entries by review rather than just date.

For bands with Limited flag, add a subfeature to be able to put in specific off-limits dates, if needed. See item 3 of
http://webdev.archive.org/iathreads/post-view.php?id=1958 and followup http://webdev.archive.org/iathreads/post-view.php?id=1959 fo background. Should be able to take dates back out if needed (eg, Phish reversed their etrading policy on a number of dates.). Not sure how it would work with more hairsplitting (eg Garaj Mahal date OK except for 1 particular recording of it), but could be handy for more general cases. Off-limits date listing should be viewable by all, but not modifiable by all (people can just tell admins to add something).

i see a bunch of talk about email when a band has a new show up. what if when a band has a new show uploaded, on the browse page the band name changes color (perhaps a red), as does the year, and the new shows for several days after the upload. this way the user only has to visit once a week or so to see the new shows and has an easy way of finding them. This color changing feature could also work in that new bands could have a color (orange perhaps) for the first week on the archive. ID:92

Artist recommendation feature- recommendations could go under the band details area for each. If you like this artist, you may like x, y, z...

Rationale: As names increase, it gets harder for people to sift through to what they might like best. But lots of artists object to being pigeonholed into style boxes, so here's a softer idea for association.

How it could work: (1) For any OK'd artist, patrons could select from other OK'd artist(s) to set up a recommendation linkage. After any linkage is made, it would appear on the first one's band details page. (2) To keep these recommendation links useful and cut down on the "It's all good, dude" effect, allow people to cast a simple vote on a linkage someone has made, with buttons for "I agree" vs "I disagree" on each. Then next to the recommendation, show a tally of how many other people agreed or disagreed with the linkage. Still other users can take that tally into account. (3) To prevent vote padding, maybe set it up to let through only 1 vote per specific linkage per individual patron ID.

Maybe some of this could work through a Recommendation Center page or something. I bet there is a pool of enough caring people around to have this work- assuming it's doable!

Add instructions on how to resubmit a show for md5check/flaccheck etc... when a user has corrected failing files. - In other words, when the system sends them an email notifying them of the failures, it would be nice if it also included instructions on how they can manually resubmit it on their own. Regarding the show ratings (1 to 5 stars),
Allow for two different ratings per show...
One rating for the sound quality of the tape, the other rating for the quality of the performance/setlist.

The reason I say that is because a 5 star performance does not necessarily mean a 5 star recording quality.

Thanks for all you do.

Move the "Notes" section to just below the "Setlist" section. As it is right now, the "Reviews" section splits them up, so when a show has 3+ reviews it's tough to match up guest tags with the Notes without scrolling up and down a few times.

More user confirmation before doing actions.

For an example on the "Contribution Center" page, you might see a paragraph like this :

"MD5 checksum verification failed. Waiting for user to correct.
Waiting for user intervention. Since you are the contributor you can confirm that the above issues have been resolved. "

There is a url under "above issues have been resolved" -- clicking it resubmits the show to be verified. Instead perhaps it can go to a page confirming this is what the user actually intends to do so.

"Are you sure you want to resubmit the show?" Something as simple as that. Just a thought.

It would be cool to put a curator-view only 'APPROVE THIS SHOW' link on the left of the details page under the 'This Show' heading. Obviously it would show up only for shows waiting for curator approval, since now what i do is open the details page of a show in a new window (fromt he CE) and look it over, then click the policy to make sure it is solid, then close this window and click 'approve' from the CE. I guess the 'bundling' of needed approval shows still needs to be had (as in the CE) but clicking 'ok' on the show details page seems 'one-step easier'. ID:137

Hello. Great site, but what would make it greater is some sort of genre/description field for describing live music artists - that way, it'd make it easier for us to 'discover' new artists (I've never heard of most of 'em so at the moment I'm just browsing randomly). Also, perhaps you could prompt reviewers to enter such descriptions as well as their own comments.

Thanks - excellent site.

Firstly. Luvya, Luvya, Luvya.

Please reverse the order of the live music reviewer comments. It would make more sense (and add incentive) having the first comments on top w/ the preceding and, occasional, rebutal comments scrowled down. Reviewer comments are probably not referred to except by new viewers and would probably not be bothersome if the very first comment is always found at the top. Thanks.

feature request: LMA Forum Stickies on top FAQ issues?

howdy, we're all understanding of nooB questions, but the increasing number of RTFM/RTFAQ posts on "why no concerts from 'Flying Gardensheds from Hell' or 'Look People' (or whatever other non-troll band request) " might be proactively addressed by a stickie at top of the LMA Forum post list?

IE something titled "Wondering why your favorite Band X isn't yet here?" or "Please read before posting to ask about concert availability." A concise stickie text addressing the issue could include a link directly to the appropriate FAQ section....

Perhaps other frequently-asked-without-first-reading-the-FAQs items could be addressed in the same manner?

So why aren't there any Look People concerts? ;-) (extra credit to those who knew the band...)

thanx for all your GREAT work, mitB!

The Newton Project is making available online, for free to anyone with internet access, the work (ALL of it) of Sir Isaac Newton. Much of this is from manuscripts that are either out of print or have never been published. See: http://www.newtonproject.ic.ac.uk/

Their funding runs out at the end of 2004. They've applied for more, but may not get it. They also seek support to produce a print edition of his non-scientific papers, for which something like the bookmobile might be perfect.

In short, if they don't get their funding, the Internet Archive should look into partnering with them so that they can keep up this work. Their goals are the same as the Archive's: they're putting knowledge on the internet for free for everyone. It's a great fit.

Make the movies details page not display the "view movie scenes" link for items where user uploaded own animated GIF.

From jon:
The link is shown as a legacy thing - in the "olden days" it was harder to
check if thumbnails exist. Now it's fairly easy to check when drawing the
details page (using the $movieFiles->files array or the $formatArray).

------------------------------
Eg: Frank Pannucci has uploaded his own animated GIF:

http://movies08.archive.org/3/movies/PRELINGER_SILLY_BULLS/PRELINGER_SILLY_BULLS.gif
This stops thumbnails being generated, with his
animated GIF taking precedence, and is intended behavior.

Since this is a live audio archive, it would be great to have some ongoing stats on equipment/transfer lineages. All lineages could be queried and a list of equipment generated and bar graphs could show clearly what people are using for: mics, decks, conversion, etc.

Since the live audio covers a long range of history, an overall breakdown with a subsequent year by year or decade by decade breakdown would be cool also. This would be like a mini-archive of equipment lineages.

On http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-contribute.php?stage=upload_info i think the line:

Once your uploads are complete, you now need to import(link) the concerts. Do NOT go to this step before the files are done uploading, as it causes problems with our automated Contribution Center.

should be changed to:

Do NOT go to this step before the files are done uploading, as it causes problems with our automated Contribution Center. Once your uploads are complete, you now need to import(link) the concerts.

I think people are trigger happy on links and would click before reading the next line about how not to do so until complete. In approving shows i see a lot that are imported before complete.

It would be nice to give the prefix associated with each artist somewhere, either in the main all-shows listing, or in the "policy notes". For example,

http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-band-showall.php#Diesel_Dog

should have a "archive prefix" listing that indicates that "dd" is the prefix to use.

I was thinking as I approved 'mother tongue' (who are from whatever
country that has file domain extention '.de' .. that the archive and
LMA is global and is becoming more and more global.. i've seen a few
europe bands pop up here, and of course all the usa ones.. but I was
wondering what / how hard it would be to add a field on the band
policy creation page that is 'country of band' or 'origin country of
band' ... or something like that? it would be good to collect that
data if the band gives it so that in the future there is a 'show bands
by country' (maybe furthur, by state?).. just thinking out loud, what
do you think? Surf Coasters would be Japan, ... heck, i'd love to see
some africa bands too... i guess i'd even add a line to my standard
'____ a GO to archive.org' that would be:

"just for our records, we like to keep track of where each band is
from... what city / state / contry do you guys consider yourself
from?"... i don't know, if anything just for my personal knowledge..
always cool to find out a band you love lives in the town you are at
but you just didn't know it yet.. this location info could be public
on the policy page for users (maybein the footer with the other
public info?)

thoughts?

In contrast to other feature reqs for extra stars, I recommend *removing* the star system from the reviews. As we have seen from the personal comments in the reviews (which people make depsite the cautions not to), star amounts (and attempts to influce the average stars) seem to spark many conflicts. Further, misguided people often place single-star reviews instead of error reports. People's *words* about an item are the most valuable component of reviews. Without the stars, visitors can judge by reviewer's thoughts only. Thanks! ID:206

I explain : for example If someone want to download all the MP3 files in the 78RPM collection.

Make a webpages or a dynamic link that include the podcast request people whant.
It can be a great Idear for the netlabel scene and all the related sounds, and also extent this to the other media (book films etc..).

It would be a great thing for people that want to get many files from the archive and want to get it without time consuming...

Thanks for a great service! But:

I'd like to see the audio file downloads cleaned up a bit. For example, often there are ZIP:s and M3U:s with the MP3 files, but not with the Ogg files, which would be very convenient. (M3U works fine with Ogg, of course.) Also, the format link table currently used isn't very useful I think. I'd prefer a simple list like this: (Underscore is a hyperlink, ### a comment.)

-------------------------------------
Artist Name - Album Name

Listen to all _as MP3_, _as Ogg_. ### Two M3U links.
Download all _as MP3_, _as Ogg_. ### Two ZIP file links.

Song 1 Title: Listen _as MP3_, _as Ogg_. Download _as MP3_, _as Ogg_. ### This would be M3U links and direct downloads.
Song 2 Title: etc...
-------------------------------------

Add more formats if they're avaliable, like WAV, SHN, FLAC etc., but not as streams.

BTW, has the Vorbis encoder been updated yet? You really should use the latest version...

Video would be similar. Use the Ogg Theora+Vorbis java applet!(*)

-------------------------------------
Producer - Title
Watch in browser _as Ogg_, _as MPEG-4_, _as MPEG-2_. ### Applets and plugins.
Download _as Ogg_, _as MPEG-4, _as MPEG-2. ### Direct links.
-------------------------------------

Right now, there are often Ogg Theora files, but they're hidden behind the "all files" link and there's no java applet.

It would be totally great if the audio archives supported podcasting - i.e. publishing RSS feeds containing links to new content. You could publish a podcast of "most recent MP3s" as well as "most recent from the Grateful Dead" etc. It would probably get a lot more people downloading the free audio content you have available.

I have some spare time, and I would really like this feature implemented, so if you need someone to implement it, send me email at peter@cs.uoregon.edu. I was going to write a screen-scraper to do this on my own, but it would be even better if it was available for everyone.

Links to other sites

A well ordered and searchable list of other sites that provide such open access information on the web. Note: I have some at: http://www.wematter.com/links.htm#av (with associated blog area: http://wematter.blogspot.com/2005/05/links-08.html )

My proposal is:
1) Provide a forum for people to submit a site to you. (and a contact for the site) -- and other info it they can provide it.
2) Automatically forward an Email to the contact, assuming the site is not in your database, that you are considering adding a link to the site requesting:
2.1) Permission (assumed after 15 days)
2.2) A site title
2.3) Keywords for the site
2.4) A site discription
2.5) (If you can set up a hierarchal organization, perhaps using dmoz (http://dmoz.org/) or yahoo) the place in the structure where the site it.
2.6) Other information, e.g. Access requirements, Archival time...

3) Then have some easy (automatic) way to put the site, and its associated discription in a table with search capability.

4) Then put a link in your top titles, [Other Sites] --> (a page with the Forum location, the "Top Level hierarchal structure", a Search box, and an advanced search form)

I think what I'd like is the search to return a list of the sites, their locations, a 1 line discription, and a pointer to the full site information. -- That way I could refine the search, go to a site that was found, or look at the details of the site's discription.

As an initial first step you might be able to build a Q/D form, pure text search, and link so that people could start submitting the other sites, and then when you have time, flesh it out with more powerful software.

Thanks.

Current video material from feature films has horrible artifacts because of poor cropping (for example Charade).

Because progressive video compressors are designed to compress noisy photographic images, possible black boxes around picture forces the compressor use most of the available bandwidth in a desperate try to preserve these sharp borders. This means that little bandwidth is left for actual film image making it blocky and causing compression artifacts.

Please, if at all possible, crop these films properly from original telecines before encoding them. It will preserve the material better and save bandwidth.

To Whom It May Concern:

Greetings. I am searching for a particular image that was on a website that is no longer operational. The website is ata.feathers.net. If you search for this website in archive.org, and select the Dec 02, 2000 page, then click on the "Artwork" button, then scroll down and under "Avians" select "Generic Birds" and then scroll down and you'll see illustrations by an artist known as "Pilot." Actually, you won't see the images, but you will see the names of the jpg files. I'm looking to obtain the birdtf.jpg file by Pilot, but it doesn't show up when I look in your archive. Is there any way you can help me obtain this jpeg? Please contact me via e-mail, if possible. My e-mail is twilson2084@yahoo.com. Thank you kindly.

Just adding my voice but... Rss and/or email notification of show additions would be great - preferably limited to selected bands, and ideally including a geographic constraint.

The ability to add comments (aka "reviews") without choosing a star rating.

While I'm thinking of it, how about dropping the star rating system altogether - perhaps replacing it with one that's meaningful.

Eliminate Ratings, Stars, and "wiki" Commentary
Rationale:
I think that when someone walks an armload of delicate and precious gear through the crappiest neighborhoods in the country to attempt to get the best recording from a hall with the acoustics of a crypt they deserve at least some degree of peace and respect.
I have seen comments insulting brother and sister tapers who made amazing recordings in the most horrible sounding halls and despite FOH staff mishandling.
These tapes were GREAT, considering how bad the show sound was in the section.
And what do they get from the commentors ?

"Too much bass"
"I deleted this after taking two days to D/L it 'cause it sounded like shit !"
"The piano didn't come through"

No thank yous, no appreciation, just angst and ire.
The comment section is completely irrelevant and distracting to the Archive mission.
It is a forum for opinionated, misinformed, and downright silly commentary.
It has no benefit to users, as the credentials and scope of perspective of the commentor are unknown.

I truly hope that Archive takes a more respectable position and turns off comments.

In the long haul, the stupid comments make Archive look stupid in the realm of digital libraries.

turn off reviews in audio section. people who review shows are more often than not ...

1) not qualified to review
2) don't distinguish between performance and recording, so the review implies either or both (good or bad)
3) are commenting based on a bias (e.g. don't like the band in general, don't like sbd tapes, don't like aud tapes, etc.)
4) useless in terms of forming a clear picture of either the performance or recording - and thus misleading to someone who is unable to distinguish someone's bias from a true "review".

This is a feature that could be useful for the user and useful for the archive.
It is the possibility to have legally valable copies of pages of the archive.
This could also a possibility of gaining money to help the archive to grow.
For exemple, in a judgement, an attorney could bring a page extracted from internet archive.
The process would be very simple: in order to get such a page Internet Archive could put a simple form to fill, a small fee to pay and
Internet Archive would testify the page is what its robot found on the net on the date .... and send if requested, a paper copy of the page.
A fee of 40 $ for a single page and 5 $ for each susequent page (sometime in a trial many pages could be asked) + 5 $ for each printed page would be fair as it will sure pay itself.
Having many trial where the page of the archive will be accepted, will also give more relevance to the archive.

Old software (abandonware, etc.) should be made available to users like an online library that can "borrow" a digital copy of software and play it on an hardware emulator (collaborate with emulator writers to achieve the security necessary). The physical copies of software could be donated to the Archive by anyone and could be "checked out" on a token system, only so many tokens for the number of physical copies in the archive. To the LMA crew, up-loaders, downloaders and listeners-

I love what you have done with LMA. Being able to play the posts so you can hear the sound quality and what the bands have done is spectacular.

I wonder how possible it would be to take it to the next level? What if you could click on a link that would play multiple artists. Maybe it would randomly play though all of the recently added uploads. Maybe you could give it some guildlines such as dates or bands that you want or don't want. It would be even better if you could save these playlists and play them again at a later date.

I for one would sign on every day and press play for sure. Not that I don't already.

What do you think? LMA Internet Radio anyone?

You could greatly reduce bandwidth and load balancing costs by providing torrents to files that were popular. The problem of a torrent not being available because no one is seeding it has been solved by project Ibiblio (who I am sure you have heard of) with their Osprey + Permaseed solution:

http://torrent.ibiblio.org/

http://osprey.ibiblio.org/

http://osprey.ibiblio.org/wiki/Docs/Permaseed

Here is a model of how you might use BitTorrent to offset bandwidth costs and more efficiently disseminate and decentralize information, thus increasing freedom of information:

I think a control panel for registered users would be the perfect adition to the Archive. I log into the Archive and there is not a control panel where we can manage the files we have uploaded. I have uploaded my first free music album and I have to go to the file and then link to the edit page from the download page... it makes no sense! other services like facebook and even myspace have a very-easy-to-use control panel. we the creators an developers of these files you are receiving can help a lot with catalogging files by ading a control panel to our accounts. the index page is quite cluttered and messy. I don't see a tidy space to start with. you shoud crae more about showing a tidy welcome in this page instead of offering direct links to files in your collections.
This is a library, isn't it? so make a face and buil very robust but flexible search tools and let us search for ourselves.

Most peer reviewed scientific journals charge a lot of money (perhaps averaging $25.00) merely to view/download papers of from one to perhaps 20 pages, documenting the results of research. This puts research out of the reach of the private citizen. It is also an egregious policy, as much/most of the research is publicly funded, and the basic premise of scientific research is that it is for the public good. Can steps be taken to change this, perhaps making these publications available through the Archive? ID:352

It would be convenient if we had access to a 'bookshelf' of items that we want to use. A simple 'send to bookshelf' feature would make such a feature easy to use and make our user experience much more convenient.

Hi!
The xResolveUrl function in your javascript currently actually loads URLs. This is not so nice for, say, irc:// urls in Firefox with ChatZilla installed. Currently, your code causes loading a page with irc:// links to actually open those links automatically, which is a very bad user experience.

To remedy this, I can think of several possible solutions:
- blacklist IRC in this code, like you did for mailto: and javascript: . This solves the ChatZilla problem, but maybe not others
- only resolve relative URLs (so test with a regex like /^[^:]+:/ to see if there's a protocol at the start of the URL). This solves the problem in general, I believe.
- manually create absolute URLs in the client side code using a custom-written function, instead of relying on the browser. This, I suppose, is probably the least attractive option, but if you borrow code from an open source project like Firefox it need not be a complete disaster.

Thanks!

Hello Archive.org tech support,

it would be very handy to have a check box for "public domain" videos in the advanced search panel.
Working on a linguistic university research program, we're looking for videos with "no rights reserved".
Searching your gigantic database and checking videos licences one by one is taking a lot of time so we deeply hope you could add such a feature to your interface.

Thank you.

For very, very long directory names when users are uploading, bad things will happen - for example 'Mary_Stafford-Im_Gonna_Jazz_My_Way_Right_
Straight_Through_Paradise' had the directory name and meta_xml filenames concatenated when approved, so it didn't import properly. Either find a way round this or find a way to warn users not to do it, I'm guessing?

Downloads from the archives (just any old file stored on a former web site) do not work.
Either
1. Disconnected at 1024 KB of download. No mention of this in any FAQ.
Configuring download mangler to use one connection makes no difference.
2. Downloads 99% of file, then closes connections.

3 archive.org DOES NOT SUPPORT RESUME - download has to start ALL OVER AGAIN. This weird non-support of a common HTTP feature is a huge drain on your server, as downloads are DONE ALL OVER AGAIN, instead of just retrying and downloading the three missing bytes or something. This is a FUNDAMENTAL FLAW in your HTTP support.
The files I happen to be interested are typically around 3, 4 of 5 MB. I wouldn't mind a slow download, but not being able to see but not download because of serious server-side defects is infuriating.
I looked at AIFM. Program has no help, no file menu to speak of and doesn't do anything.
Used several browsers and downloads manager, including your favourite Mozilla. It is definitely a serious archive.org issue.

hey dudes, just was looking at the radiators 2004-07-04 show and the user had checked the 'no mp3' box and had left the track times in the setlist field. like normal i clicked 'clean' to remove them. i then noticed that after i do so, the no mp3 box was unchecked, having been reset to it's original value? maybe? i don' tknow if this happens a lot or was an accident, but this might be the reason some shows end up with mp3's after the user swears they checked the box. maybe we can disconnect that aspect of the two things?

for curators, while looking at the direct link that is 'just reviews' (ex: http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-reviews.php?id=12581 ) there is no 'edit' link to go in and edit the reviews, if say there is 4 of the same review some-how, to get in and delete the extra ones, curator has to go in the front door and find the regular details page and then 'edit' then do the reviews. it would be helpful if there was an 'edit' link on just the reviews page, and if possible, a regular direct link to the show details page on the reviews screen.
