It's pure corn alright.
But it's sweet corn.

Subject: A real charmer!

A slight movie but a very happy one to watch. I'm presuming John Boles is doing his own singing, it sounds quite good. IMDB lists him in several musicals.

Sometimes the Billy Lee's performance as Danny is a bit mechanical, but other times he really nails it.

You can see several depression era themes at work here. "Opera" as the height of culture. "Divorce" as evil. And "the rich" as thoughtless self-indulgents.

In another time and place Mr. Carter and Mr. Rankin could have ditched Mrs. Rankin and gotten married themselves to take care of Danny, since they seemed to have more concern for him than his mother. Maybe in 2041.

This is a true "classic". A feel-good, movie if there ever was one. Father and son, struggling together to make a life for themselves. The acting is great and the story believable. You'll kick yourself if you don't watch this one. I give it...stars but, since there are only 5 stars available...!
