Subject: Jason andn the Golden Fleece

This film is better described as Jason and the Golden Fleece, from Hercules' point of view. It's way unfaithful to the original myth (I have yet to see a movie faithful to the myths, anyway), but it's worth a watch.

We would not watch this if the ultimate Hercules, Steve Reeves, wasn't in it.
Steve starred in and occasionally produced and scripted these things, but somehow we don't hold that against him; in fact we love him more for it. Hercules rescues Iole, returns her to Pelias. The prince is killed, Hercules is blamed. Hercules gives up his immortality, fights the Cretan Bull. Jason enters as the rightful king. He sails to the end of the Earth to get the Golden Fleece. There's a storm, a hostile tribe of women, a traitor, and Jason kills a dragon. The Fleece is stolen, Hercules is imprisoned. Iole frees Hercules, who aids Jason. The battle is one of the best in the Hercules series, his wrists in chains Hercules kills the man who murdered Jason's dad, pulls down the pillars of the palace and wipes out the cavalry. Pelias commits suicide and Iole goes to Hercules. The end.

Subject: 'We could watch an old Steve Reeves Movie"

This is the grandaddy of them all! The origin of all those "Sword and Sandal" epics that showed up weekly on television during my mis-spent teen-aged years. And, of course, it paved the way for contemporary stars like Arnold Schwarzeneggerm Kevin Sorbo, and Lucy Lawless.

It was followed, first, by HERCULES UNCHAINED (1959) (the Italian title is Hercules and the Queen of Lydia but the film skips over the more controversial aspects of Hercules' relationship with Omphale---including the whole dressing up as a woman part).

Then came all those great "Sons of Hercules" movies with that wonderful theme song that was used in each film:

"The Mighty Sons of Hercules
Once thundered through the years;
These men of steel could never feel
The curse of a coward's fears!
The Mighty Sons of Hercules
Were men as men should be;
They burned with dreams, and turned their dreams
Into history!
A hundred giants, brave and bold,
They ruled the world in days of old.
The Mighty Sons of Hercules
Were men as men should be;
They burned with dreams, and turned their dreams
Into history!"

There are over 20 of these films and I hope they show up here soon!!!

Oh, for the HERCULES I give it four stars (I would give it five but the dragon that guards the golden fleece is really dreadful even for 1958.

Steve Reeves (who spent his last years raising Morgan horses) passed away in 2000.

If you like cheesy fantasy adventure films, this one is for you. The picture quality is a bit suspect at times (as is to be expected), but overall it's very watchable. The movie itself is very enjoyable. Steve Reeves and Sylva Koscina were great.
